Daybook created by commission merchants in Charleston, S.C., listing expenditures associated with trade and shipping during early national period. Merchant's day book listing ships and masters, accounts for sale of African and African-American slaves, hiring of slaves, medical accounts, farm produce, including accounts for John Black, John Chesnut, Elisha Poinsett, and Daniel Bruce. Other entries include 24 Jan. 1794, "Gab[rie]l Manigault for pew rent in St. Michaels Church"; 14 June, charges to Panton Leslie & Co. for "wharfage drayage storage negro hire for beating and attending the skeens during the Embargo," [which the United States imposed in 1794 in retaliation for hostile acts in restraint of American trade by Great Britain].

Camden District, S.C. merchant, plantation owner, and South Carolina state legislator. A native of Virginia, he married Sarah Cantey (d. 1786). With his partners Joseph and Ely Kershaw, William Ancrum, and Aaron Loocock, Chesnut operated a large mercantile business from 1764 to 1774.
